Purpose of Position:
STEM Transfer and Articulation Pathways (STEM TAP) Peer Mentors serve both at CSUCI and in the regional community to promote education equity through proactive outreach and engagement of students and their families.
 
STEM TAP Peer Mentors will provide outreach to high school and community college students to promote STEM degree and career pathways, facilitate workshops, support and coordinate large-scale outreach events, facilitate guest speakers, and support matriculating STEM students to CI. STEM TAP Peer Mentors will engage in outreach activities and events and promote educational equity and support. 
  • Serve as near-peer mentors to high school and community college students in order to support effective STEM student matriculation to CI
• Work collaboratively and contribute to a team composed of student peer mentors, community partners, faculty and professional staff
• Assist with and/or help design program planning, development, coordination, and implementation of outreach programming, including but not limited to workshops, events, career panels, etc.
• Design and facilitate STEM transfer and articulation curriculum for toolkits
• Serve as CSUCI peer mentor liaisons in the regional community
• Collaborate with other STEM TAP peer mentors to co-facilitate workshops and provide support with workshop content and logistics
• Develop programming marketing and social media campaign materials related to programming for the STEM Transfer and Articulation Pathways program
• Attend weekly team meetings and/or trainings prior to and during the academic semester
• Meet regularly with STEM TAP Peer Mentors, partners, professional staff, and work teams as designated
• Assist with program data tracking, reporting, and evaluation of all activities
• Meet deadlines as given
• Assist the department’s professional staff with special projects and events, and
• Complete all administrative duties, including base office hours and any other tasks as assigned. 
Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate CSU Channel Islands student
• Must be enrolled in at least 6 units per semester in a STEM major or completed major coursework
• Must be enrolled in at least 6 units during time of employment and throughout the term of employment
• Must have a minimum cumulative and semester GPA of 2.00 and be in good academic and behavioral standing (not on academic or disciplinary probation) with the university
• Must be available to work at least 6 hours a week
• Must have access to reliable transportation to the job site, if required (NOTE: This position may require you to work off-campus at designated regional K-12 school or community college sites)
• Must be sensitive to the needs of under-represented and low-income students
• Available to work flexible hours and on weekends
• Interest in advancing educational equity, serving as a role model for other students, and working on a student success team
• Strong organizational skills
• Ability to work effectively in a group as well as independently on project tasks with timelines
• Effective time management, including, but not limited to being on time for scheduled meetings with professional staff and/or students, allocating sufficient time to the planning of activities, and making efficient use of time
 • Effective communication with diverse groups of people, including, but not limited to students, parents/families, faculty, staff, and guests 
• Demonstrated consistency and persistence in follow-up as well as creativity and willingness to take initiative, and
• Ability to contribute to a team-oriented environment
 
Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Bilingual Spanish/English
• Experience as a peer mentor
• Group facilitation skills
• Experience working with a diverse populations
• Possess cultural knowledge to support diverse populations
• Due to federal funding, the candidate must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States
• As a condition of employment, this position may require a background check
• If hired the individual is required to complete appropriate campus human resources trainings
• If hired the person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
