Embedded Peer Mentor

Hourly wage: $19.43/hour for May 2024 EPM Training. A 5% increase is expected to take effect 7/1/2024, which will bring the rate up to ~ $20.40/hour. The increased rate will begin with August 2024 EPM and PEEP Training and carry forward into the new academic year.

Weekly hours: 14-15 hours/week on average, additional hours during training.

The role of Embedded Peer Mentors (EPMs) is to support the academic success of students enrolled in courses that anchor Learning Communities and Living-Learning Communities and transfer transition courses, as well as their success in navigating university life outside of the classroom.  In this capacity, EPMs serve as: student leaders in the High-Impact Practice and Experiential Education (HIPEE) unit and the Learning Community/Living Learning Community Program, liaisons between their faculty partner and students in supported courses, academic coaches and peer mentors, co-curricular learning community leads, and student support services specialists.

Each EPM will be assigned to support a specific course section in a given semester and will facilitate small learning communities outside of the classroom (Dolphin Interest Groups, aka DIGs). EPMs supporting First-Year students will co-facilitate student learning communities throughout an entire academic year. EPMs are expected to hold regular peer advising meetings with students, organize and engage students in co-curricular activities and events, and refer students to support services as needed or schedule time with their faculty partner to have services integrated into course sessions. EPMs will regularly engage in leadership and professional development opportunities to facilitate the development of skills needed to be successful in supporting their faculty partner and students. EPMs also work on instructionally-related projects.

  • Partner with faculty to support student learning and development;
  • Facilitate student success activities for one class session each week for 20-30 minutes;
  • Organize and lead in-class workshops about campus resources and services, as well as academic success;
  • Co-facilitate group work and activities, including reflections;
  • Monitor students’ basic skills and academic needs;
  • Provide regular peer advising, academic coaching, and mentoring to assigned students;
  • Participate in course assessment and project evaluation of EPM-facilitated activities
  • Organize and facilitate regular meetings with students in smaller learning communities called Dolphin Interest Groups (DIGs) throughout the academic year;
  • The purpose of DIGs is to engage students in co-curricular activities, keeping them informed of campus life, providing referrals to on campus student support services, and delivering mentoring services. DIG members may attend campus events together, form study groups, and check in on how courses are going. Students develop strategies about getting the most out of faculty office hours, share effective learning strategies, etc. 
  • Act as a liaison between students and other campus resources;
  • Collaborate and cross-train with Housing and Residential Education professional staff and Residential Advisors (for those EPMs supporting a course that is part of a Living Learning Community);
  • Monitor academic progress of students;
  • Identify appropriate academic referrals for academic success;
  • Provide weekly office hour for LC students, which may be used for other work tasks between student visits;
  • Utilize office hours for class preparation and organization of DIG activities;
  • Track student participation; and,
  • Assist with all Learning Community/Living Learning Community and HIPEE  events.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to work with students in person and virtually.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to contribute to a team-oriented environment.
  • Basic computer and software knowledge including experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Service-oriented.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.
  • Be a currently enrolled CI student.

  • EPM hiring will occur in April 2024, pending funding approval.
  • In-person EPM Training: May 20-24, 2024. Participation is required for all EPMs.
  • PEEP and EPM Training: August 12-16, 2024 (in person) and August 21, 2024 (virtual option). Participation is required for all EPMs.

ORIENTATION LEADER OVERVIEW 

The Orientation Leader (OL) is responsible for assisting CI in preparing for, planning, coordinating and facilitating Orientation. As an OL, you are responsible to help foster a positive, educational and academically conducive experience for our incoming Dolphins. OLs are expected to demonstrate professional and appropriate relationships with students, parents and other staff members during the summer in order to serve as a positive representative of CI. Positive behavior must be demonstrated on and off campus as well as social networking sites during work time. Must represent University services, academics, organizations, etc., as part of the total University experience in an accurate and unbiased manner. Expected to communicate with new students during the summer using virtual platforms. Will assist students and parents with their transition to CI by providing in-depth campus tours. Responsible for facilitating Dolphin Pods per orientation session by leading, connecting, and following Pod Guidelines. Must attend all trainings and team planning meetings. Expected to assist presenters on orientation dates. Must attend all orientation and training sessions in their entirety.  

OLs are required* to be available on the following dates**: 

  •  Move In & OL Training: August 7, 2024 (Move In) and August 8-9, 2024 (OL Training).
  •  First Year Orientations: August 19-20, 2024 and August 22-23, 2024.
