Position Title: ASSET Peer Mentor

Hourly Wage: $16.50/hr

Weekly hours: 10-20 hours weekly

Purpose of the Position:

ASSET Peer Mentors (APMs) promote educational equity through proactive outreach to and engagement of students by way of peer mentorship, workshops, and programming that promote an inclusive university culture and culture of academic success. APMs will engage with first-time students and new transfer students admitted into the ASSET Scholars (Academic Student Success Excellence Team) program. APMs will support students’ transition to CSUCI, bolster academic success, promote educational equity, and support faculty and other facets of the ASSET Scholars program.

  • Serve as peer mentors to ASSET Scholars (i.e., CSUCI students) by way of providing 1:1 sessions, and Scholar Squad Sessions, and assist with navigating the university culture in order to enhance a confident transition to CSUCI
  • Work collaboratively and contribute to a student success team composed of peer mentors, faculty, and professional staff
  • Lead student engagement campaigns that support academic success and keep students on track for graduation requirements
  • Assist with and/or help design program planning, development, coordination and implementation
  • Design and facilitate academic success curriculum for toolkits
  • Share co-curricular opportunities (e.g., internships, research, etc.) with ASSET Scholars
  • As needed refer ASSET Scholars to academic resources (e.g., Academic Advising, tutoring) and services(e.g., Counseling & Psychological Services, Disability Accommodations & Support Services, etc.).
  • Serve as liaisons between the ASSET Scholars and ASSET Faculty Mentors
  • Collaborate with ASSET Faculty Mentors to co-facilitate workshops and provide support with workshop content and logistics
  • Develop programming marketing and social media campaign materials related to programming or the ASSET Scholars program
  • Attend weekly team meetings and/or trainings prior to and during the academic semester
  • Meet regularly with ASSET Scholar faculty mentors, partners, staff, and work teams as designated
  • Assist with program data tracking, reporting, and evaluation of all activities
  • Meet deadlines as given
  • Assist the department’s professional staff with special projects and events, and
  • Complete all administrative duties, including base office hours, and may include planning and facilitating meetings, leading team assignments, and any other tasks as assigned.
  • Interest in advancing educational equity, serving as a role model for other students, and working on a
    student success team
  • Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate CSU Channel Islands student
  • Must be enrolled in at least 6 units during time of employment and throughout the term of employment
  • Must have a minimum cumulative and semester GPA of 2.5 and be in good academic and behavioral
    standing (not on academic or disciplinary probation) with the university
  • Must be available to work at least 10-12 hours per week
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented and low-income students
  • Available to work flexible hours and on weekends
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to work effectively in a group as well as independently on project tasks with timelines
  • Effective time management, including, but not limited to being on time for scheduled meetings with professional staff and/or students, allocating sufficient time to the planning of activities; and making
    efficient use of time
  • Effective communication with diverse groups of people, including, but not limited to students,
    parents/families, faculty, staff, and guests
  • Demonstrated consistency and persistence in follow-up as well as creativity and willingness to take initiative
  • Ability to contribute to a team-oriented environment, and
  • Due to federal funding, the candidate must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States
  • Experience as a peer mentor or mentee
  • Group facilitation skills
  • Experience working with diverse population
  • Possesses cultural knowledge to support diverse populations

If hired, the individual is required to complete appropriate campus human resources trainings.

In collaboration with Orientation and Engagement Programs, the ASSET Peer Mentor (ASM) will also be adding Orientation Leader to their official job description during August 2024 before beginning their work as an ASM within PEEP for the academic year. Please read the description below to read about the amazing work you will be doing!

ORIENTATION LEADER OVERVIEW 
The Orientation Leader (OL) is responsible for assisting CI in preparing for, planning, coordinating and facilitating Orientation. As an OL, you are responsible to help foster a positive, educational and academically conducive experience for our incoming Dolphins. OLs are expected to demonstrate professional and appropriate relationships with students, parents and other staff members during the summer in order to serve as a positive representative of CI. Positive behavior must be demonstrated on and off campus as well as social networking sites during work time. Must represent University services, academics, organizations, etc., as part of the total University experience in an accurate and unbiased manner. Expected to communicate with new students during the summer using virtual platforms. Will assist students and parents with their transition to CI by providing in-depth campus tours. Responsible for facilitating Dolphin Pods per orientation session by leading, connecting, and following Pod Guidelines. Must attend all trainings and team planning meetings. Expected to assist presenters on orientation dates. Must attend all orientation and training sessions in their entirety.

  • Transfer Orientations (August 14, 15, 16, 2024)
