Enhancing Student Research Mentor

Salary: $16.50 /hour
Hours: 10-20 hrs/week

The Research Peer Mentor (RPM) role promotes academic success strategies & undergraduate student
research. RPMs assist Faculty Student Research Advocates (FSRAs) to create & sustain a culture of student
research & promote early exposure to student research skills across the curriculum, particularly those that
are transferrable knowledge & skills applicable to the workforce through a Student Research Toolbox.
Work to de-mystify student research & expand research opportunities to STEM & non-STEM fields. RPMs
will maintain drop-in hours, coordinate social media & other communication to generate greater
awareness, & help connect students to faculty-mentored research opportunities & promote additional local,
state, & national research experiences for CSUCI students.

• Serve as a peer mentor for undergraduate research by way of providing 1:1 peer mentoring,
workshops, and research toolkits to current CSUCI students
• Engage in outreach efforts that include the ASSET Scholars cohorts & students who would not
otherwise engage in student research.
• Work to de-mystify student research & expand research opportunities to STEM & non-STEM fields.
• Design and facilitate student research toolkits
• Help connect students to faculty-mentored research opportunities
• Promote additional local, state, & national research experiences for CSUCI students.
• Develop programming marketing materials, social media campaigns & other communication to
generate greater awareness of student research opportunities
• Attend weekly team meetings and/or trainings prior to and during the academic semester
• Assist with the tracking, reporting, and evaluation of all activities
• Meet deadlines as given
• Assist the department’s professional staff with special projects and events, and
• Complete all administrative duties, including base office hours and any other tasks as assigned.

• Interest in advancing educational equity, serving as a role model for other students, and working on a
student success team
• Must be a currently enrolled upper division, or demonstrate record of relevant experience, undergraduate
CSU Channel Islands student
• Must be enrolled in at least 6 units during time of employment and throughout the term of employment
• Must have a minimum cumulative and semester GPA of 2.5 and be in good academic and behavioral
standing (not on academic or disciplinary probation) with the university
• Must be available to work at least 10-20 hours per week
• Strong organizational skills
• Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented and low-income students
• Available to work flexible hours and on weekends
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
• Ability to work effectively in a group as well as independently on project tasks with timelines
• Effective time management, including, but not limited to being on time for scheduled meetings with
professional staff and/or students, allocating sufficient time to the planning of activities; and making
efficient use of time
• Effective communication with diverse groups of people, including, but not limited to students,
parents/families, faculty, staff, and guests
• Consistency and persistence in follow-up as well as creativity and willingness to take initiative
• Due to federal funding, the candidate must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United
States

• Possesses cultural knowledge to support diverse populations

• If hired the individual is required to complete appropriate campus human resources trainings
• If hired the person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child
Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU
Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment
