CIMAS Mentor

The Project SOAR Peer Mentor (also known as CIMAS) position is designed to improve student engagement, retention and success by providing extra support services to CSUCI students. These additional responsibilities will focus on targeted student outreach (e.g., registration and retention; peer advising; prospective students; social media; newly admitted students), developing workshops related to best practices in student success and culturally relevant programming, presenting to alumni and donors to increase philanthropic support, and increasing awareness and utilization of student support services on campus. Project SOAR Peer Mentors engage in targeted outreach efforts aimed at supporting CSUCI students. Additionally, CYS Catalyst Peer Mentors promote programming and activities related to the Channel Your Success campaign and to other student success and retention cross divisional efforts

  • Serve as peer mentors to to CSUCI students by way of providing 1:1 sessions, academic success workshops, and assist with navigating the university culture;
  • Lead student engagement campaigns that support academic success and keep students on track for graduation requirements;
  • Design and facilitate academic success curriculum for toolkits;
  • Share co-curricular opportunities (e.g., internships, research, etc.) with CSUCI students
  • Refer students to academic resources (e.g., Academic Advising, tutoring) and services (e.g., Counseling & Psychological Services, Disability Accommodations & Support Services, etc.);
  • Develop peer mentor programming marketing materials and social media campaigns;
  • Leverage technology to increase student engagement and promote student success (e.g., AI ChatBot development and targeted responses);
  • Attend team meetings and/or trainings prior to and during the academic semester;
  • Assist with the tracking, reporting, and evaluation of all activities;
  • Assist with special projects and events; and
  • Complete all administrative duties, including base office hours and any other tasks as assigned.

•Interest in advancing educational equity, serving as a role model for other students, and working on a student success team
•Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate CSU Channel Islands student
•Must be enrolled in at least 6 units during time of employment and throughout the term of employment
•Must have a minimum cumulative and semester GPA of 2.5 and be in good academic and behavioral standing (not on academic or disciplinary probation) with the university
•Must be available to work 10-20 hours per week
•Strong organizational skills
•Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented and low-income students
•Available to work flexible hours and on weekends
•Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
•Ability to work effectively in a group as well as independently on project tasks with timelines
•Effective time management, including, but not limited to being on time for scheduled meetings with professional staff and/or students, allocating sufficient time to the planning of activities; and making efficient use of time
•Effective communication with diverse groups of people, including, but not limited to students, parents/families, faculty, staff, and guests
•Consistency and persistence in follow-up as well as creativity and willingness to take initiative
•Due to federal funding, the candidate must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

•Group facilitation skills
•Experience working with diverse populations
•Possess cultural knowledge to support diverse populations

•As a condition of employment, this position may require a background check
•If hired, the individual is required to complete appropriate campus human resources trainings
•If hired, the person holding this position is considered a ‘mandated reporter’ under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment
