University Culture Outreach Mentor

Salary: $ 16.50/hr
Hours: 10 to 12 hrs/wk

Purpose of Position:
University Culture Outreach Mentors (UCMs) serve as ambassadors in the regional community to promote
educational equity through proactive outreach and engagement of students and their families by way of
peer mentorship, workshops, and programming that promote a culture of student success.
In the community, UCMs work to infuse a University going culture within Ventura County, motivate, mentor
and inform students about college pathways, raise awareness of the benefits of higher education, financial
aid/literacy, and provide college readiness support to students who are seeking a baccalaureate degree. In
this capacity, the UCMs will aid in the planning and implementation of University Culture events and
marketing for the University Culture program delivered to students middle school through community
college and their families.

  • Assist in the program planning and implementation of University Culture;
  • Have knowledge of and ability to use outreach curriculum including but not limited to: University Culture
    website and social media platforms, college preparation, financial aid/literacy, and student academic
    success strategies;
  • Develop lesson plans as needed for any regional outreach workshops;
  • Facilitate workshops and deliver presentations to regional community partners;
  • Assist prospective students with navigating University Culture, and perform other outreach related
    and/or other activities that meet outreach grant deliverables;
  • Coordinate outreach work with other student mentors and/or supervisors, including but not limited to
    scheduling, preparation, close/debrief, and clean up;
  • Data collection such as tracking, reporting, and assessment of all activities including maintaining
    accurate hour, attendance, and mileage logs by deadlines given;
  • Complete all administrative support, including base office hours and general office support, and any
    other tasks as assigned; and
    • Required to attend weekly team meetings as well as Peer Education & Equity Initiatives (PEEP)
    Orientation and Training in fall and spring semesters.

QUALIFICATIONS
• Must be a currently enrolled undergraduate CSU Channel Islands student
• Must be enrolled in at least 6 units during time of employment
• Must have a minimum cumulative and semester GPA of 2.50 and be in good academic and behavioral
standing (not on academic or disciplinary probation) with the university
• Must be available to work at least 6 hours a week
• Must have a valid Driver’s license and access to reliable transportation to the job site, if required (NOTE:
This position may require you to work off-campus at designated regional K-12 school or community college
sites)
• Available to work flexible hours and on weekends
• Must be sensitive to the needs of under-represented and low-income students
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral (fluency in Spanish preferred)

United States.

• Attend all outreach events not in conflict with your academic schedule
• Act as a liaison between students and professional staff members.
• Encourage an environment of teamwork.
• Assist professional staff with administrative duties and development of special events.
• Serve as a role model and maintain a professional attitude with all partners.
• Be flexible with schedules and occasionally work evenings and weekends.

If hired, the individual is required to complete appropriate campus human resources trainings.
